Great to chat with the North London @histassoc.bsky.social branch this evening about Eleanor of Aquitaine and her contemporary queens - any excuse to talk about Eleanor is a good evening! Very interesting q&a afterwards - one of the main reasons I love doing history 😊

#OTD 1399 Henry IV was crowned king of England. If you're interested in more beyond the Substack post, highly recommend Helen Castor's The Eagle and the Hart for the story of Richard II and Henry IV, and Elena Woodacre's biography of Joan of Navarre

Today has been pondering treason A LOT, and I'm greatly enjoying the recent article by Sophie Ambler in A Journal of Legal History and this fab book 'A History of Treason' by Chris Day, @thegozfather.bsky.social, Neil Johnson and @euanroger.bsky.social - highly recommend both!

#OTD 1100 death of William II, king of England. Unmarried and childless, the throne passed to his younger brother Henry I upon William's death. He was killed in the New Forest, likely near Beaulieu, by an arrow whilst hunting.

#OTD 1714 death of Anne, queen of Great Britain and Ireland. Anne's health had declined in the months leading to her death, though she continued to rally. A stroke on 30 July 1714 left her unable to speak, and she died at 7.30 the next morning

I'm jumping between the medieval and the early modern for today's writing, the research for which included this gem from Lambeth Palace Library on the coronation ceremony of Queen Anne (1665-1714) of Great Britain and Ireland at Westminster Abbey.

Photo my own, please do not reproduce/copy.

#OTD 1377 coronation of Richard II.

The coronation took place at Westminster Abbey, preceded by a grand procession across London. After Richard swore his oaths, he was divested of his shirt, screened from view by a golden cloth, and anointed on the hands, chest, shoulders, and head with holy oil.

This document has Matilda listed as both empress and Lady of the English - empress being the most powerful title she could wield in her campaign, Lady of the English as a temporary title until she was crowned.

Matilda - Empress, Lady of the English, or Queen?

The foundation charter for Bordesley Abbey c.1141 was part of Matilda's attempts to assert her authority as the rightful ruler of England. The civil war, or 'Anarchy' as it became known (1135-53), saw Matilda attempt to be crowned as queen.

Lots of big books in London for this week's archival trips!

Below is Register Arundel I which contains several royal and noble wills which are incredibly helpful in making connections and gift-giving practices. Was a genuine joy to comb through, as well as looking at other Lambeth Palace MS!

#OTD 1312 death of Piers Gaveston, favourite of Edward II

Gaveston's execution at Blacklow Hill was the end of a politically perilous relationship with Edward. Gaveston was executed by the orders of Thomas earl of Lancaster. The king 'grieved for Piers as a father...grieves for his son.'

In Oxford this week for some book 2 research! Despite my many walks down Broad Street, Oxford, to get to the Bodleian, I've never noticed this (modern) plaque before. It is a commemoration of the site of the executions of three religious men during the reign of Mary I.

back from leave and straight back into the archives! I've got my medievalist and my social history hats on today, but the real gem is this 1308 writ from Edward II to Piers Gaveston, where Gaveston is listed as 'our dear brother and faithful'.

#OTD 26 May 1583 death of Esmé Stuart, 1st Duke of Lennox, and alleged favourite of James VI of Scotland. Aged 37, he joined the 13 year old king's court in 1579, where he was regularly bestowed with gifts, lands, and titles.

It also contains the gorgeous Thistle Chapel, finished in 1911. The Order of the Thistle is granted by the sovereign to Scots/people of Scots ancestry for distinguished service. The chapel contains stalls for 16 knights, adorned with their crest, a stall for the sovereign and two royal stalls.

Some photos from my recent trip to St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh!

Founded in 1124 by King David I, it has been the site of many fascinating events, and is the final resting place of James Stewart, first earl of Moray, half-brother to Mary, queen of Scots, and regent of James VI.
