It's not a stupid thing; the last 'tough on crime' govt failed to build enough prison places to hold those sentenced, failed to invest in the judiciary. We have a 70k+ backlog of cases - offend today, court case in 2028 ..... ludicrous. This is to reduce that backlog - it need not be permanent.
