On this day in 1884, Swiss-born German actor Emil Jannings was born. He is best-known for his roles in Der letzte Mann (1924) and Der blaue Engel (1930). After the Nazi seizure of power, he prolonged his career by starring in several films that promoted Nazism.

On this day in 1974, German actress Franka Potente was born! Her breakthrough came in 1998, when she starred in the acclaimed action thriller Lola rennt and has since starred in Hollywood films including appearances in the Jason Bourne films. Alles Gute zum Geburtstag Frau Potente!

On this day in 1891, Austrian-Jewish actress Ellen Richter was born! Richter founded her own production company (1920) after she grew increasingly frustrated with being type-cast into 'exotic' roles. Richter had disappeared into relative obscurity her films were shown at Pordenone & Arsenal Berlin

On this day in 1889, German film producer & executive Erich Pommel was born! As head of production at Decla-Film, Decla-Bioskop & UFA, Pommel was responsible many of the best-known Weimar films including Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1920) and Metropolis (1927).

On this day in 1976, German actress Diane Kruger was born! She starred as Bridget von Hammersmark in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (2009) and in 2017 made her German-language debut in Fatih Akin's Aus dem Nights, for which she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress
