Before Germany was a unified country, peasants revolted against feudalism. The Keulen, or two handed club, was one of the weapons most available to the poorest “German” peasants of the 1500’s. It’s method of use was recorded and passed down. It was revived in the 1800’s for self defense and exercise

The baseball-style bat is a very close analogue to the Keulen of Rothstein’s 19th century manual. On the lighter and shorter side of the range that he advised for the club. It is also a common improvised weapon, even when not used for the sport itself #self #defense #street #HEMA
