- efibootmgr should now have a new entry for grub. (I also purged the old EFI boot stuff)
- 'strings /efi/EFI/grub/grubx64.efi' should contain the right fs_uuid for the root partition
and then i hit the reboot button...
... it worked. (anticlimactic ending)

then I just removed the imgs from /efi, regenerated them in /boot via 'pacman -S amd-ucode linux', re-ran grub-install + grub-mkconfig

nah, turns out GRUB works just fine: only needs 160KiB of EFI space!
idk why I stopped using GRUB (maybe its config system was too complicated or I just valued the elegance of EFI boot?)

can't make a recovery disk either: since kernel just got updated, the driver for the flash drive won't load until restart :'3
(sure I could just boot into Windows and make a recovery disk there but we need the stakes high for dramatic effect)

well now I can't anymore cuz initramfs-linux.img is 100MiB+ >_<;
