I know this kinda thing can happen, friends choose sides and such… we grow and move on from who we were… but it’s definitely a sad moment since it just quietly happened in the last few months since we last chatted. I hope you’re good out there friend.

It should go without saying that when pose loyalty to our communities, I mean we put others needs on the same level as our own. Humanity itself is our collective responsibility and we share the burden of care at the very least for providing basic health, food, shelter, and education for everyone.

Seriously. I’m fairly well off now, dead center of CA middle class… making efforts to always do better, but lord help me… having seen just how quickly that recommended “2 months of rent” savings can be lost in a flash terrifies me if I ever have to dip into that territory to pay an unexpected bill…

So getting back to SNAP (and other essential health programs) We must continue to reject a way of thinking that isn’t girded with love and loyalty to our communities. We should find our strength and inspiration in one another rather than through exploitation or “othering.” Always strive for good.

The kind of hyper-individualism that our culture has favored for decades really has bred a mindset that villainizes community or societal interdependence at the expense of any kind of empathy for others or self.

Whats going on right now in the US is tragic and antithetical to the American Dream I was told about. Our society is slipping into a kind of twisted neo-feudalism, brought to you by big tech oligarchs and authoritarian nut-jobs who would rather sell you or replace you with AI instead of see you fed.

and what’s worse is it’s most often espoused by people of the same class (not just elites) who only separate themselves from the rest by claiming some imaginary moral high ground. It’s a grab for any ounce of power that can give them an advantage over their perceived enemies (their neighbors).

Systems like SNAP are in place as a safety net to the stability of individuals AND the health of the state. Claiming “subsidies for citizens breeds some kind of dystopian welfare culture” is such a garbage take... it bothers me tremendously especially since it’s an easily parroted cop out.

Briefly going to add here: when I was unemployed I was on SNAP for 10 months. Without it I would have probably starved and been homeless. I burned through every ounce of savings I had. I nearly went bankrupt and am still scraping my mental health together after several years have passed.
