Hmmm I think I disagree a bit. Frodo doesn't know about the silmarillion but he knows hobbits are a peaceful folk, Bilbo his uncle had gone on a adventure before him. Which I would say is lore of the world. Things that effect the players is what seems to be held on.

Yea I agree, but I don't think they don't invest cause they don't want to. It seems that they don't gain anything from doing so mechanics wise. The worlds lore isn't on the character sheet, so the only time they can interact with it is out of game. Notes, and backstory.

3. In terms of payment artist. Commission work is a negotiation. Working payment plans, or royalties could work to lower the price. Having a formal contract for that would be a must. Like I know when I do commissions. I over payment plans for different parts instead of me paying everything at once.

2. Fiver is good, but also I know people have used Twitter. So making post about looking for artists will have them come. You could leverage a Kickstarter to design your project. There was a YouTuber that did that and got funded.

1. Like I said before you shouldn't worry about it until you ask for pay. You could also use references of artist, but then your also using work without the artist consent. I say its a bit over thinking. If anyone is coming at you for using ai for visual guidance then they have to much time.

Nothing to share quite yet in the rpg realm cause I'm still working on it, but one thing I'm proud of is these characters sheets I made for playtesting. Been making the game for 3 to 4 years, and as you can see. It's gone through a lot of changes. Lots of good in both designs, and a lot of bad.

Personally if your using ai artwork to establish a look and feel the the work. I don't think that's to harmful. As long as your not selling the product, But if you do Kickstarter or use a publisher. Then I feel that will give you the money to fund the art.

Probably make a group for promotions / hiring. YouTubers, artist, and twitch people all do it. Not talking follow for follow. More like hey check out x person, collabs, algorithm helping, etc. just a thought.
