unlikely to have continuous inhabitation (the adriatic sea came and went at its own pleasure in those days, and there were several waves coming out of Africa and reaching the area via a few different routes). But it is kinda cool!

What a humbling trip (what is that the father doesn't see of the daughter, or chooses not to see?) & a privilege to be able to so concretely experience the constitutional partiality and contradictoriness of human experiences.

Reading them side by side during a long flight (after the computer gave up on me) opened a kaleidoscopic view of history and memory, of facts that don't match, of tragic blindspots, of hints never resolved. 3/

I then discovered his original notebooks had also be selectively published with comments by his daugher, the novelist Dacia Maraini. Dacia, it turns out had also written a strongly feminist novella decades earlier on the same events, AND another novel reinterpreting her mother's diaries. 2/
