Is there really anything worse than the vending machines for used panties?

As far as I could find out it's more dialect.

The kanji for クラブ are 倶楽部, which is of course ateji, but the choice was ingenious IMO.

The parliaments in some Nordic countries still bear it in their names: Alþingi (Iceland), Folketing (Danmark), Storting (Norway).

In German a formal expression for "arresting someone" is "dingfest machen".

A typo. I picked the wrong kanji.

I dabble to form a passive sentence in sonkeigo, eg. "The King was killed". In teneigo it's 王様は殺されます。

But now I have the problem that the passive form can also be used as a humble verb. 殺されられます and お殺しになられます both look weird to me.

Nerd, not need.

No, I asked my son. He's a Sherlock Holmes need to the bone. Maybe because his name is Conan?

His name is John H. Watson, but his wife calls him James. That might be some lovey dovey nicknaming, but the common interpretation is that his middle name is Hamish, which is the Scots version of James.

Yeah. In most Germanic languages, the common way expressing gratitude literally means "I'm thinking of what you've done for me", while in lots of Asian languages, you're giving an apology for the effort.

And the Latin camera was a loan from ancient Greek καμάρα
November 13, 2023 at 8:16 PM
Afaik from the Italian "camera", which is of course a descendant from the Latin word.

Cherokee is clearly inspired by the Latin Alphabet.

Interesting. Thanks. I don't find the source again where I got this from. It stated that やばい is derived from 危ぶむ.

When the speaker speaks politely about his own actions in regard to the listener. It's sometimes called kenjōgo II.

system Keigo", p.11ff - www.researchgate.net/publication/...

I can't wait to see the final books. Do you teach the "old" keigo like most textbooks or the "new" system that differs between 丁重語 and 謙譲語?
