We study the mind's mechanisms that give rise to decision making, social behaviour and face perception, guided by behavioural experiments, fMRI, EEG, computational models. Why do people make bad decisions? @rhulpsychology.bsky.social
🧠 Using computational models, we found that a misguided belief about future options (a "biased prior") best explains this error.
Rather than being lazy or impulsive, people genuinely expect the next options won't be much better—even when they are!

Why do people sample too few options before choosing? In our task, participants tried to buy smartphones at the best price – but this bias could lead to suboptimal decisions in areas beyond shopping, such as hiring or even police lineups.
