The gilted edges of Hymenochete rubiginosa. I wander if theres a purpose to this golden fringe?

I'm just back from a fungal conservation trip to Sweden. I visited Taiga pine forests to look at the role of fire for mycorrhizal fungi and kelo (fire hardened pine wood) fungi and lichen. Fire is now completely suppressed. The charred snag and the fire scar on this pine were from 1882!

Fly orchids in Dorset in stunningly rich calcareous grassland🪰

A first for me. Not #fungi, but probably some interesting mycorrhiza 😜

Visited a rare fragment of Sweden's old growth boreal forest rich in aspen and willow.

Shocked to learn the scale of broadleaf herbicide use for productive conifer timber.

Hard to comprehend the loss. Haploporus odorus VU, needs very old goat willow, it'll take centuries to recover

Not much #fungi out right now on fungi conservation tour of Sweden, but fortunate that have been introduced to Auratiporus (Hapilopus) croceus by Stellan Sunhede.

Bright orange when fresh and leaves unquiet stringy white rot. This is CR in most countries and VU globally.

Investigating Sweden's oak landscape with mycologists Stellan Sunhede and Anders Dahlberg.

Stellan has been meticulously surveying these oaks and their #fungi for 50 years.

We need surveys in tree time not research grant time.

Humbled.

Artificial cavity and natural cavity maker.

We need to let trees age - more heart-rot, more nest sites.

I'm in Sweden for the #fungi but I just went on a boat and saw a beaver, hobby and an osprey dive and catch a duck. Wild!

Today I start the final leg of my @churchilltrust.bsky.social fellowship.

I'm on a #fungi conservation road trip of Sweden - 1st stop, ungrazed heathy pine forest in Uppland (with comfort giraffe)

I'm trying to find information on mycorrhizal exploration types of different species? Is there a trait database with this info?

3F language is generally OK - #fungi are mentioned along side flora and fauna in the headline stat "70,000 species of plants, animals and fungi".

Bit of a blooper on temperate rainforest and leaving out lichen.

Good start, and even includes a fungi photo

#Fungi and the UK National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan #NBSAP 🧵

#COP16 saw UK Gov co-launch a Pledge for fungal conservation.

The Pledge asks countries to adopt 3F (Flora, Fauna, Funga) language and include 'concrete measures' for fungal conservation in the #NBSAP
