The David Niven, Peter Sellers & Woody Allen spoof version of Casino Royale has exactly this plot. It’s awful, admittedly, but it’s been a trope for more than 50 years!

Will go read - I enjoyed @adamroberts.bsky.social’s take on it (open.substack.com/pub/profadam...), though it sounds very different to yours! Both books have that miserable inevitabilia of Julian Barnes’s ‘The Only Story’ - a life, ruined.
