Visited Hu Shih Memorial and missed @yuanyiz.bsky.social by a few days!

Also, Hu Shih’s brandy flask goes pretty hard.

I saw three advertisements featuring Shohei Ohtani in the ~5 minute walk between my hostel and the metro station in Ximen.

He’s actually just everywhere.

Demographics can be so visible: there are kids, babies, and pregnant women *everywhere* in Ulaanbaatar, but hardly any on the streets and alleys of Tainan.

The difference between fertility rates is so apparent.

YouTube Rewind 2014 was released ten years ago, when I was still in middle school. It doesn’t feel like that long ago, but this was before Obergefell v. Hodges!

I look back upon it as the peak of 2010s internet pop culture. It’s like an anthem for Gen Z.

23000 days ago (December 13, 1961), Mickey Mantle agrees to a 1962 contract with the Yankees worth $82,000. (That’s about $850,000 in 2024 dollars.) It’s the second-highest salary in Yanks history, behind only Joe DiMaggio.

Update: many classrooms in the school now have these boxes where the phones are locked up. A kid somehow opened the phone box without a key (!) and my co-teacher is annnnnngry.

My Mongolian co-teachers and I have begun to ask students (7th and 9th graders) to put their phones on a desk at the beginning of class. They are distractions in classrooms everywhere.

I don’t recall seeing *any* rumors about Blake Snell and the Dodgers. The last time I was this shocked by a free agent signing out of nowhere was when Zack Greinke signed with the Diamondbacks.
NEWS: Two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell is signing a five-year, $182 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, sources confirm to The Athletic.

"I think it's hilarious that it would be easier for me to move to the U.K. for a year — with no job offer in hand — than to stay here [in the U.S.]" — from a very talented Canadian friend.

Finally got myself a set of these Cyrillic keyboard stickers! However, one of the many things that make Mongolian a tricky language to learn is that Mongolians often type in Latin letters instead of Cyrillic, which makes it impossible to use Google translate.

Having just graduated, I'm now interviewing some students who are applying to Princeton for the next undergraduate class. It's really surreal to be on this side of the process.

Baseball's cultural reach is simultaneously unparalleled but also so limited.

I see more Yankees and Dodgers hats in a day than NBA jerseys in a week, but I have yet to meet a single Mongolian who knows that the LA/NY on the front of their hats actually mean.
