You think that's an uphill battle, try being an advocate for the Bob Welch/Danny Kirwan era

And finally: updated tier list including all 7!

Make no mistake from the positions btw, I love that these came out. It's sidequests & alt timelines that add a lot to one of the most infodumpable catalogs in rock.

(dammit RYM why can't you have all these listed individually)

1) LA GARAGE SESSIONS (1983)

Too long? Perhaps. But with this, we have the proto-Bandcamp bridge album from Nebraska to Born in the USA that recontextualizes a LOT of how we talk about both. Much was bootlegged before, but it's a better world when "The Kl*nsman" is on streaming.

2) STREETS OF PHILADELPHIA SESSIONS (1994)

The best standalone Album™️ here. May vault to my top 10 of his. May even make a casual care about this period. Take the moody synths, marital existential dread & horny undertones of Tunnel of Love & go way deeper on all 3. Might be even better??

3) TWILIGHT HOURS (2018)

More like Bruce Bacharach amirite?? Fun companion piece to Western Stars where he goes full crooner mode. Think Sinatra circa Watertown. Bit long & not sure every song needs that orchestral swell, but a sad bastard detour I can respect. Shoutout "Sunday Love"/"High Sierra."

4) INYO (1997)

This however, entirely on track w/ Tom Joad. Doubles down way harder on the Mexican settings, to the point this is half folk, half MARIACHI. (I am not kidding.) An admirable act of cultural exchange, even if some general "semester abroad" energy can hold it back. Shoutout "Adelita."

5) SOMEWHERE NORTH OF NASHVILLE (1995)

Light 90s country-rock done simultaneously w/ Ghost of Tom Joad to blow off steam from the serious stuff. Some lovely cuts when he chills out, but largely pretty obnoxious. Three songs called "___ Man." Shoutout "Under a Big Sky" & the redo of "Janey" though.

6) FAITHLESS (2006)

Bruce was commissioned to soundtrack a western. He slapped this together in a couple weeks. The movie never got made. What's left is half ambient interludes & half gestures to gospel, neither of which go anywhere. Fun alternate timeline to think about though.

7) PERFECT WORLD (1994-2011)

Doesn't even meet the box set's concept. Just a set of loosies cut from every mainline E Street album post-Rising. Adds no new angles to his catalog. Bit of an off-putting doomer streak in the first half too. For completionists only.
