I'm the most English bloke you'll ever meet. White, northern, family tree traces ancestors in a Cumbrian dale back to 1600s. But nobody knows who my grandad was. Am I suspect? (Also my wife has Welsh ancestry. Are my kids English?) it's all just embarrassing bollocks.

American friend who lives in Madrid once pointed out that the right wing party there (the PP, all about religion, tradition, family values etc) would get called communists in the US.

In st albans in the 60s the local paper had (iirc) 20 reporters, and there was so much local manufacturing they even an industrial correspondent.

Me too. I wonder if it's because it looks like a Spanish word and that would be the natural Spanish pronunciation, and a lot of Americans are familiar with Spanish? (If you follow my drift.)

My kids' state school does skiing to canada (why? And why Canada?), sports trip to south Africa and something to japan, fkr alme weird reason! Insane.

I thought it was obvious! . They mean English at the level of a foreign language A Level, ie French or Spanish.

I went to see Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in Godot in London years ago and a bunch of blokes say behind us, I think on a *stag do* and one said, 'So what's this all about then?' Amazing. They didn't have a great time.

Interesting the UK ceo loses his job. Engliah Libel law requires publisher to prove truth, and they say the story is 'unverified'. Presumably trump can't put as much pressure on in the US where he would have to prove it was untrue. (As I understand the law.)

Yes crypto has the potential to collapse to zero, which would be bad. Also I note the diagram at the top of this thread is a good sign. This is all public and risks are clear. We didnt see stuff like this about CDO squareds until afterwards. Problems come from the secret stuff.

Yes I was just about to come back and say exactly this about private credit. First Brands is concerning. I bet people are scrabbling about working out their exposures right now. It has a worrying feel.

Yeah, it'll be messy. The market crash will be big because lots of retail investors have poured in, and will all exit quickly. Recessions are common, us economy is already shaky. There's surely no reason to believe there will be contagion like in 2008 and risk to the entire financial system?

I reported on 2008. Don't think this is comparable. Stock market crash will be tasty, but it'll be more like dotcom bubble, little systemic risk in this. In 08 people didn't understand the risk in what they were buying. Here they do, but are gambling that there is massive upside.

What I find most bizarre is the implied idea that when Britain was mostly white it was golden age of harmony. Like, the white English, Irish and Scottish were killing each other for centuries. White Catholics and Protestants were not living in harmony! And the poor were horribly exploited.

Reminds me of brexit, when the people who actually profited were lawyers and consultants - people with the skills to profit from change.

I look at my teenage kids and think, when they go on x, why would they want to stay? Insta and tiktok are being swamped by ai slop and junk. Any new platform will speed run the same trajectory. It's doomed!

I read yesterday that altman and johnny ive are working on a no-screen ai-powered friend/helper that you talk to. Like that'll work on a crowded train or in an office?? Just suxh obvious bollocks. (Apparently Ive's company is somehow worth 6.5bn dollars.)
