Her neglectful/ abusive mother survived by splitting off from reality. The trauma compounded by pregnancy + miscarriage resulted in severe emotional disturbance; she cycled in+out of jail&psych wards. It seems like your kind of story+ one that I think the author wld support knowing more about

Of course she also wrote the story The Birds is based on and Don’t Look Now. Those who dismiss her as a romance writer have no idea of the depths she was capable of. Certainly cinematic in her sweep why so many adaptations for screen. Sorry to go on- excited by both your enthusiasm for Rachel!

Du Maurier was my favorite author as a child. I read and reread all her books. Love the original films of Jamaica Inn, directed by Hitchcock The Scapegoat - Alec Guiness&Bette Davis- and Rebecca. Haven’t seen remakes. Her books are delicious and so varied but crime and class figure prominently .

nyupress.org/978147985612... Research supports your POV. E.G. just as alcohol-Mel Gibson and John Galliano, or drugs-Roseanne Barr- may disinhibit but reveal actual beliefs when people start ranting about Jews or Blacks
