Sorry for the delayed response. I’m out of Quito and live off a US salary so I can’t speak to quality of life with regard to monthly income.
However, the minimum wage in Ecuador is $450/mo, and from what I’ve heard among the expat community, you can live rather comfortable with $2K per month.

I suggest:
✅ Getting involved with local LGBTQ+ groups (e.g., “Verde Equilibrante”)
✅ Supporting community events
✅ Being a guest, not a savior
✅ And bring sunscreen—Cuenca’s at 8,000 feet 😎 🌞

It’s not perfect. But it’s beautiful. And worth it. 🌈

There’s a different reality for locals vs. expats.
A queer foreign couple might live comfortably in a hillside condo. But for Ecuadorian LGBTQ+ folks—esp. trans women—housing, jobs, and healthcare often mean navigating daily discrimination.

1) Make sure your US docs are in order
2) Visit your nearest Ecuadorian consulate for all residency requirements (e.g., opening a bank acct. etc.)
3) Crime is high in Guayaquil, and coastal/northern border cities
4) I suggest Cuenca😉
5) Register with ACS at the U.S. Embassy once you arrive

I’ve been in Ecuador for four years now and never tire of visiting these incredible islands. I recommend them to all of humankind.

But you, fine sir, are living on a bucket-list island of mine — I hope you’re soaking in the magic and spirit of New Zealand!

I’ll take your amazing sunrise, and raise you a sunset off the coast of Floreana Island, Galapagos.
