This particular effort was inspired by what has become a standard salutation between me and a friend of mine. Namely, our supplanting the customary telephone greeting of “Hello?” with a loud and hearty cry of “FUD!” (an alternate pronunciation of “food” as was often rendered by my late-maternal grandmother). It was—as you’ve probably already guessed—inevitable that this unorthodox practise would somehow manifest itself in my work. And so, I reworked the age-old idiom “food for thought” in the fashion of a playful child to create a phrase that seems to make more sense when said aloud than when read to oneself (how I wish my eighth-grade grammar teacher was alive to see this!). Ironically enough, the slogan is so gimmicky as to suggest that it was conjured up by a slippery turn-of-the-century advertising executive, yet demands a thoughtful and sophisticated presentation by way of that very perception. As such, it just seemed fitting to go with a curious, bold vintage “mystical” look (as one might see on an old fortune-telling machine) featuring what is essentially a three-hue colour scheme, as if the implied business (envisioned here as a galleria of insights) had been around before the advent of full-colour sign production. Finally, the inclusion of a stylized brain adds a borderline scientific feel to the whole design for an added sense of legitimacy and wonderment.

It would be fair to say that for many, there is no middle of the road when it comes to turnips: you either love ‘em or hate ‘em. Yet, as is the case with many things in life, one cannot responsibly embrace or discard a given position (or vegetable) outright without fully acknowledging its latent risks or rewards. And so, I devised the accompanying graphic to highlight the intrinsic peril of subscribing to extreme, narrow-minded points of view to one’s potential detriment. In this case, a stylized turnip featuring the halo of an angel and the tail of a devil reminds us that good and bad often reside in that which we exalt and condemn, ourselves included. That to examine an issue with half a mind is to beg complete ignorance of where virtue is to be had, and evil is to be avoided. The illustration might also be taken as a warning, advising us not to blindly embrace that which we think we know so well as to disadvantage or imperil ourselves by discounting its latent virtue or immorality. For example, the deceitful lover who cleaves one’s heart in two or the disheveled street person who offers a kind word that sews it back together again. Or, perhaps, it’s just a playful chaotic neutral gag of biblical proportions. In any case, who knew so much could be gleaned by way of a root vegetable (or their opinion of same?)

If someone had told me at the outset of my career that I would someday create a logo (featuring subdued earth tones, no less) promoting turnips as a variety of witticisms, I’d have run for help and/or had both of us committed. Yet, here we are. The whole idea came about when a friend of mine recounted a story of her brother acting like a prude to something she had said, describing him as a “turnip” for his over-the-top display of self-righteous disdain. Of course, I could not let the absurd mirth of the tale go and decided to make something of it in the spirit and style of an equally puritanical era, specifically, the 1950s. Looking at the graphic, one can very well imagine it being stenciled on a crate of turnips sitting on a loading dock, even if I do say so myself (sometimes I think I was born too late to be of any use to the agricultural industry, not that I ever was...well, aside from consuming heroic quantities of grapes as a kid).
