you are reminding me I'm about a decade behind in reading her books and I should do something about that

semi-disagree - City 17 and environs at least have a distinct aesthetic, to the extent that when the designer later worked on Dishonored, I recognised his style, and I am /not/ a person who recognises styles

There is definitely a lot more beige going on

There are certainly negative consequences. But also, a horrific thing is that basically everyone in that society makes excuses for him - because he's the "hero". This is not portrayed as a good thing - Thomas is horrified by his actions and their reactions - but he doesn't get punished per se

I read this in isolation and thought it was a 4-word sentence, and just thought it was a bit quirky - certainly, the problem I have with people is that they often, SO often, people (people do be people-ing) but then I actually read the excerpt...

My book club read that and absolutely loved it

Boo!
November 17, 2025 at 11:04 PM
In the last couple of years a few of my friends started up a mostly-short-story book club and I've VERY glad we did because then I went to my first Worldcon (I live in Edinburgh) and the only reason I knew 90% of the authors was due to the short stories we'd read. SFF is ludicrously diverse

20 years ago the "fandom" I was in was "walk into the local book shop and stare at the titles for a bit"

10 years ago it was rec's from authors on twitter.

and I think that's definitely ONE of the crowds on r/fantasy. Basically, the "core audience" is fractal :D
November 17, 2025 at 6:22 PM
beyond that - I attended the (local-ish to me) Glasgow Worldcon and I think the audience I was in is likely different to that of people who are very involved in committees (or who write about them)

Similarly, your use of "r/fantasy bros" implies you are probably reading different posts to me

only in that they absolutely consider whatever mild criticism they get in the media to be the same as what happened to Prometheus

Thinking about it, my personal conception of the clone wars in the late '80s involved a much more traumatic and personal war than the "robots vs clones" we got - the implications from the expanded media was that clones were the "trench warfare" technology of the day, and used by both sides

I'm so, so happy for you <3

Least by volume, most by density

I am not a serious Bond fan but my headcanon is a mix of "different actors playing the same character", "these films are a reboot so a different continuity", and "James Bond is an alias these agents have adopted", which isn't very spy-like but in some films he IS quite notorious

how old is he? I'm hoping to target my nephew...

That's stayed with me for 20 years

When I left McDs, where I'd ended up as shift manager, one woman who worked mornings said that unlike some I always let them chat away while setting up but I had an uncanny ability to pop up when they'd totally stopped working. And that she trusted that when she couldn't see me, *I* was still busy

Where does amstrad CPC sit?

(We earlier had a spectrum but I was too young for magazines at that time. I did learn to read from the manual though!)

Before I could suggest this to my book club, the organiser stuck it on the list anyway! Looking forward to reading it

that post is somewhat inaccurate - it's /accounts/ that get flagged with "rude", not posts. Your account is not currently flagged. It's also not "swearing", it's "Rude or impolite, including crude language and disrespectful comments, without constructive purpose." which is ofc subjective AF

they are saying the trend is 1.9 but would be 2.1 for about a decade if "AI-boosted"

As such, I think the graph is basically saying "unless you think there'll be a singularity, AI isn't going to really affect things" which, honestly, I do think is a nice graph
