competition is good. i’d like to see bluesky succeed. i don’t see what the long term path to self-sufficiency is though

twitter is bankrolled by elon now. there’s valid reasons to find this distasteful. but they've got plenty of runway

the vision of a social protocol is interesting. i get the comparison to "the internet"

but most successful online apps/businesses work by creating a centralized product that’s either ad-supported or pay to play

atproto has a narrow focus. you’re not meant to build a centralized product atop it

but this just punts the problem down a level. you still need cash flow to pay for mods and server racks. individual servers can’t run ads. will they be donation supported? charge for access?

the bsky team wants to build a protocol that outlives bsky the app. in the same sense that *the internet* is a protocol

if i understand right, their vision is a network of independent servers. free choice for users

if a regular social network runs out of cash, it’s likely to be bought by a billionaire and enshittified

bluesky can’t be bought. that’s a key point of distinction. but if it runs out of cash - then what?

- bluesky PBLLC employs a full team of devs and moderators
- bluesky PBLLC is funded by venture capital
- bluesky has no monetization strategy, no ads, no way of pivoting to ads
