A close-up of the ‘lichen front’, the boundary between two lichens - or is the second, outer one something else? Could this be a lichenicolous fungus, or simply algae forming these intricate patterns? Any help is welcome

A near-canonical patch of Graphis scripta (the 'calligraphic' #lichen) with its signature script-like lirellae. What’s unusual here is the complete encirclement by another, darker olive-brown lichen - or what seems to be one. Could it be Arthonia, perhaps A. radiata?

I'm a fiscal conservative, so why am I so down on DOGE? I had a chat with Jessica Reidl from the Manhattan Institute about DOGE as "spending cut theater." It's mainly serious about malice. It's not serious about the budget. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/05/o...

NEW: Black-footed ferrets were saved by a federal breeding program centered around Colorado.

It was led by Tina Jackson — a USFWS biologist fired by DOGE last month. She's now worried staff and funding cuts could drag the species back to the brink of extinction.

I agree with Yoshihito Ohmura (@lichenom.bsky.social). In fact, almost all of my good (*) photos of #lichens are kept in two versions - one in actual colors, and another one in black & white. Glad to know I’m not the only one doing it.

(*) 'Good' here should be understood here as 'the ones I like'
