Sanji flushes at the implication but valiantly retains his polite veneer. “A double should do, thank you.”
“Uh-huh," the guy stretches the syllables into something both doubtful and lewd. "We have a king available. No extra charge. It's at the back, so you won't need to worry about noise.”

(kind of cooked w this dramatic sanzo breakup though, i should get back to it)

He lets Sanji go.
It's the worst thing Sanji has had to feel in his entire adult life.

He frowns. “I never told you to leave.”
“Yeah, not in so many words. I'm not an idiot, Zoro, I know when I'm being kicked out.”
“Well, I don't. I've never kicked you out, you fucking run out the first chance you get! The only thing I ever asked you is to stay.”
He didn't need to say that last part.
“Wait, you—you meant it? When you said I could stay..?”
Zoro wants to kill him. It takes every minute of control he's practiced in his life to stay put and grind words out instead.
“What the fuck else would I mean?”
Sanji looks cowed by that. Idiot.
“But you…I mean…why can't you just do things normally!” he finally throws out.
Zoro doesn't even dignify that with a response.
“It's called social cues,” Sanji says defensively, uncurling his posture a little. “If you knew anything about normal human behaviours you'd get it.”
Zoro rolls his eyes. What a waste of fucking time, with all this shit.

He should have just laid it out in the first place, should've known Sanji would be so weird and complicated and stupid.
“I want you to stay. I always fucking want you to stay, I told you to stay the first time and you shut me down so I didn't ask again. But that's what I want.”
Sanji sits back on his folded legs. “Stay for what? Breakfast?” “Breakfast,” Zoro confirms. “Dinner. Breakfast again.”
He smiles when Sanji shuffles closer.
“Uh-huh…you gonna rent me out per day?”
The insinuation doesn't sting this time, not when it's coming with a shy smile and half-moon eyes, from a man who's almost crawled right back into his arms.
“Hm, I'm looking to buy, actually. Indefinite lease or whatever.”
He snakes an arm around Sanji and pulls him the rest of the way, pleased when Sanji wraps his arms around his neck like it's instinct.
Zoro lets their noses brush together. “Stay?”
Sanji nods, pressing his answer into Zoro's lips.

“Come on, its my fucking birthday,” Zoro complains, holding Sanji where he in atop him. He can't help it. Something sharp slices under his ribs at the idea of being left cold tonight of all nights.
He's not even a fan of birthdays, but he knows Sanji loves them. Wouldn't he indulge Zoro a little tonight?
Sanji looks at him curiously, scanning down to where Zoro's hands are clamped around his hips. He laughs softly.
“Alright, Marimo, just give me ten minutes. Let me help you out until then,” he grins and snakes a hand between them.
Zoro grabs it. “That's not what I meant!”
He also didn't mean to yell. Sanji looks startled, too surprised to be angry at his tone. Zoro lets go of him at once.
“I’m—you can go,” he says shortly, pushing Sanji off him and looking away, embarrassed and ashamed by his outburst.
His feelings aren't Sanji's fault.

An offended scoff makes him look back. Sanji is staring daggers at him, flushed and insulted.
“I can go? Wow, you're a fucking asshole.”
“What?”
“Did you leave the money on the nightstand, too?” he asks mockingly. “I don't give a fuck what day it is, you don't get to dismiss me. And here I was thinking I'd already heard the worst ways you showed me the door.”
“I’m not—”
But Sanji isn't done, talking right over him.
“At least they had some class. I guess it's my fault for putting up with it, making you think you can use me like your own private whore—”
“Wh—hey!”
Zoro sits up at that, shocked. Sanji's arms are curled round his middle as he seethes, but now Zoro can recognise the embarrassment and hurt in his features.
“That's not…I would never,” Zoro fumbles for an adequate answer, getting stuck on one part in particular.

Sanji knows this dance. The polite issue of exit. We should do this again sometime. I have a big meeting first thing in the morning. Sorry. Get out.
He takes his cue and rolls out of bed, squashing his disappointment with ire.
What did he expect? For Zoro to take him in his arms and spoon him til morning?
Yeah right.
“No, it's fine, I should get going anyway. Early morning, y’know,” he says brightly, throwing his clothes on as fast as possible to get out of this awkward space.
“...right,” Zoro replies at length.
He can't help the twist in his gut at the speed with which Sanji redresses. They hadn't talked about any of this of course, but he'd hoped nonetheless. He didn't think Sanji was the type to start something casual with someone he knew this well, but—
It probably wasn't even that. More likely just a one night stand, a quick mistake to brush off in the morning.
Right.

“It's past three.”
Zoro doesn't know why he's trying again. Sanji made it quite clear last time what he was here for.
Maybe the simple fact that it happened again gives him the confidence to voice his desire again. Surely any reasonable person would take the obvious excuse to—
“Ah, yeah, I didn't notice. Better get going,” Sanji says slowly.
He should know better. Zoro made it clear he wasn't interested in lingering after they'd finished. And now Sanji's messing with his sleep schedule. Great.

“Oh, it's raining,” he points out, as they lay listening to the drops drum against the window. It was a little different this time.
Maybe it's the weather, he thinks with amusement.
Cozy almost-autumnal air made things warmer between them. Sanji wants to close his eyes and sink into the heat of the bed and the man next to him.
“There's an umbrella by the door.”
Oh, right.
The man next to him got what he needed from Sanji, and now their time is over. He sits up with a sigh.
Zoro's chest hurts. He's starting to get sick of this. The more they do this, the more he wants, and the less he's able to keep watching Sanji roll out of his bed without stopping him. Though Sanji must be getting sick of his weak attempts to get him to stay, seeing as he was cutting Zoro off at the pass with his own excuses.

What else did you do, hm?” Zoro is the embodiment of honour and duty about to unravel. Sanji's never wanted him more. Suddenly, Sanji is pinned against the door. “Like I had a choice,” Zoro hisses. “You made sure I heard, you stayed right here, knowing I couldn't go anywhere. You know this door creaks?” He's so close and Sanji might be developing a conditioned response to being pressed into this door, and he doesn't have a hope of really listening to a word that's being said to him while Zoro's breath is puffing hot against his skin and his body is leaning closer and closer.$
