When change happens, we need not be terrified, deceived, or succumb to false predictions. Rather, it is by our perseverance that we will secure our lives.

The 1st reading (Wis 13:1-9) sounds like Aquinas' 5th argument for the existence of God - the order & beauty of nature points to its Creator. Human's are endowed with the ability to deduce this. But many don't. As Jesus says, "Where the body is, there vultures gather" (Lk 17:37).

Wisdom is:
"an aura of the might of God
a pure effusion of the glory of God
refulgence of eternal light
spotless mirror of the power of God.
Passing into holy souls from age to age,
she produces friends of God and prophets" (Wis 7:25-27).
"Wisdom of God, infuse me with your spirit."

Sometimes scripture teaches us plain manners. Ten lepers were healed but only one returned to say, "Thank you!" (Lk 17:11-19). When I was a kid I was taught:
"Door to hearts
open with ease.
The two keys are
"Thank you" and "Please.""
Let us be people with good manners.

Wisdom says, "The souls of the just are in the hand of God" (Wis 3:9). Wisdom is trying reconcile the mortality of humans and the immortality of the God who created them. The Devils envy many have brought death (3:2), but very hands that created humans is the source of eternal life.

The reading from Wisdom (1:1-7) tells us that "she" does not enter souls that plot evil. Rather "she" is with "those who love righteousness and seek God in integrity of heart" (1:1). The Psalm response today can be our prayer - " Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way."

When Jesus says "Make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth" (Lk 15:9), he is not saying that we become money loving people. Rather, that we are not attached to it; that our identity is not lost when we do not have it; that it does not determine our dignity, character, faith.

In the "Parable of the Dishonest Steward" (Lk 16:1-8), the clever steward is commended for being a prudent manager. The moral is that just as the steward was good at his crafty trade, the "children of light" must be good at their life vision - be prudent disciples for Christ. Are we?

Jesus' question, "Who among you having a hundred sheep and losing one would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it?" (Lk 15:4) is an ironical question. No one does that. But God does. Thus Jesus eats with tax-collectors and sinners (15:2).

"Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law" (Rom 13:10). Perhaps Paul was the first say that the later commandments of the Ten Commandments are about "love your neighbor" (13:8-9). Jesus had summarized the entire law into love of God and neighbor.

Among the many practical exhortations for Christian living that Paul gives in Rom 12:9-17, these stand out:
- Rejoice in hope,
- Endure in affliction,
- Persevere in prayer (12:12).
Both Jesus and Paul and great examples of this. Their life examples should help us be the same.

If our tendency is to affirm and support the rich, powerful, and famous over the poor, the vulnerable, and helpless, then we really have not understood Christ or Christianity. As Jesus puts it, "When you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind" (Lk 14:13).

"Poor in Spirit,
Mourn with those who weep,
Meek,
Hunger and thirst for righteousness,
Merciful,
Clean of heart,
Peacemakers,
Persecuted for the sake of righteousness" (Mt 5:3-10).
There is blessedness is being the kind of person Jesus was. May we find ourselves blessed!

The anguish Paul felt for the Hebrew people (Rom 9:1-5) is the anguish many of us feel for those whose hearts have been hardened against the universal love of Christ. Jesus had the same anguish (Lk 14:1-6). Anguish can turn into frustration or it can be an opportunity for prayer.

Herod sought to kill Jesus. But Jesus was not threatened because his life was not in Herod's hands but in God's (Lk 13:31-35). Jesus lived what Paul later wrote, "If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Rom 8:31b). Don't be afraid to speak the truth. For "If God is for us..."

"Strive to enter through the narrow gate" (Lk 13:24) means to walk the path Jesus trod - of empathy, mercy, clean heart, humility, non-violence, peace, righteousness, and self-sacrifice. When this is difficult, as Paul says, "The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness" (Rom 8:26).

Nothing is known about them except for their names mentioned along with other apostles. Does it matter? Not all of us are in the limelight. Most of us are quiet workers in the vineyard. As long as we are answering God's call, nothing else matters.

In today's gospel, a woman crippled for 18 years was cured by Jesus on a Sabbath (Lk 13:1-17). The synagogue leader became indignant. What was he missing? He was missing what Paul says in Rom 8:14-15 that God's fatherly care is not about legalism but genuine love for God's children.
