I am not an artist at all but it was fun to draw something and then mostly ruin it by colouring it in with felt tips. (with a wash of grey added digitally after scanning it in)

#nzpol Wondering who to vote for in the local elections?
Karen Yung (Kaz) is standing for Hutt City Council and I reckon she's a fantastic candidate. She's just posted this on FB about how she herself works through the voting options. I thought it worth sharing here.
Karen Yung facebook post: Some of you have been asking me what are my thoughts about the candidates and the local elections, and who I'll be voting for. I'm currently still working through who I'm putting a tick (FPP system for HCC) or high ranking (STV system for GWRC) for, and it'sa process of elimination; but as I've been doing that wrestling, I've noticed there are definitely some key aspects I've been considering: 1) COMMUNITY: What is the community grape vine telling me? If I know someone, that can be really helpful; especially if I really know them, and perhaps even consider them a friend (although even that's not a guarantee they have my vote, mind you.... Great people don't always have the best skills and strengths for a role, afterall). However, if they're more of a colleague or acquaintance, how do other people know and see them? What are people experiencing from them? One of my red flags is the amount of times just in this election someone from the community has come up and shared with me a not so great experience where a candidate (it has been more than one) who has shown up for the first time "just to take a photo" and left shortly after or other similar experiences. And often, I couldn't help but feel like the sentence of 'And I felt a bit used' was left unspoken. We need to be mana enhancing, not diminishing. 2) CAPABILITY: Do they know much about Local Government? Now I don't expect wannabe elected members to have gotten elected before, because there a number of ways to get involved. Like have they even shown up to a recent HCC meeting? I have heard some say their years of governance experience is transferable; and having been involved with governance for 20 years and local govt for 9; to a degree it is - but there's a lot more to LG than just governance. Also, re the mayor? Baseline : they need to know more about LG than me. 3) CULTURE: Do they have a vision? (And are they capable of actioning it?). I want a leader who can see bigger and better than just themselves to set things up for a better city for years to come. Do they inspire, and can they bring people along with them? Because that's the sort of leadership we're gonna need, to pull us out and beyond the limitations of a short election cycle. My other basic considerations: 🫶🏽 Are they a good, kind person? The other day a resident asked something along the lines of, if you had an ailing family member, which mayoral candidate would you leave them with? And actually we're fortunate that they're all decent sorts and I'd be happy to leave them with either. However, I need more than just a good, kind person for city leadership. ❤️🤍🖤 Māori Wards - are they supportive? Will they be voting for them? Might seem minor, but it's a major for me. If you don't understand the basics of Te Tiriti in these lands, and the importance of walking the talk and honouring it, you probably will fail to be committed to do the just thing when we really need it. 💡Have they been present and shown up? Civic leaders need to show up, especially when it gets tough - does their track record show this, as an existing elected member or community leader? 👂Do they listen? Not have they heard me, but are they actually listening, engaging, growing, learning? This one speaks a lot to authenticity and is a fundamental basic, and also says a lot about their approach to people. You may very well have other measures and values that are more important to you, but either way - please make sure you vote, have your say, and choose people who do genuinely represent you.
