Cranking out “Carmilla” today. Got to the third chapter because it’s a very easy read.

There was a ringing in Levi's ears. He could smell the staleness in the air once again, like the oxygen was heavy and thick with a stench of death. It made breathing impossible. Well, Levi had felt as though breathing was impossible. He'd take quick gasping breaths, inhaling through his nose to avoid as little germ inhalation as possible, just to hold his breath until he couldn't anymore; the cycle would then repeat itself. He was rushing to his room-his commander's room which they shared-to undress and bathe in the connected bathroom. Levi could see it in his head, the steam of the water fogging up the room and dirt falling through the drain as he finished his bath. It sounded relaxing, tranquil, though he knew it would be anything but. He's be left with red, angry skin after soaking in a scalding bath and scrubbing until his flesh was raw. He'd drag his nails across his scalp, scrubbing bacteria out of his hair because dammit, hair held so much bacteria. The fancy soaps Erwin liked to bring back for him would be left alone in favor of stronger, sterile smelling soaps he managed to convince himself cleaned better than the former. It was illogical, but it made him feel better. The dryness, the cracking skin, the stinging all meant cleanliness even if it meant a higher chance for infection in reality. He made it to the bedroom and nearly slammed the door shut behind him in his haste. Stinging, that constant burn of shallow splits in his skin, had become so normal as Levi pulls his cravat undone. The ODM harness was next to be stripped away, allowed to drop to the floor. Shaky fingers unbuttoned and pulled off his shirt so he could drop the contaminated fabric in the hamper to be washed tonight. Levi refused to leave dirty clothes sitting around longer than he had to. They smelled, they took up too much space in the hamper, they could contaminate everything around them in their time sitting and festering. He'd be stuck thinking about the fabrics touching everything around them, unable to focus on anything else that was actually important, so he'd have to remember to wash his laundry after dinner. Maybe he'd even tackle Erwin's laundry at the same time. No, no he'd certainly do Erwin's laundry with his own. If there was something he could do to make Erwin's life a little easier, he'd do it, and he'd especially do it if it was what he was best at: cleaning. His boots, pants, and underwear were the final articles of clothing to be stripped away and thrown in with the rest of his laundry. Levi had made his way across the room, to the door leading into the bathroom that remained closed for Levi's sanity, and opened the door to step into the room he had just cleaned this morning and was certain to clean again tonight. The hard wood of the floor may be dirty under his feet, but he could clean them in the bathtub and scrub the floor clean when he was dried off and dressed because, didn't you know, wet hair and skin allows bacteria and viruses to cling. It doesn't, and Levi knew that, but he couldn't let go of the idea. Maybe, maybe, maybe. Maybe he was wrong. Maybe he was right. Maybe. Could he risk it? Sure. Would he? No. No, Levi wouldn't risk it, because he would get sick if he did; with his luck, that was exactly what would happen. No he couldn't risk it, couldn't risk it, couldn't risk it; so he'd wait until he was dry and clean to scrub the floor on his hands and knees, only to bathe once again. Vicious cycle.
