In the same way that most pedigree animals have been selectively bred for the benefit of humans like the pug next door, but humans aren't going to stop eating chicken overnight so we have to start with getting legislators to recognize the need for change to the industry - it has to start somewhere.

Although I agree with the vast majority of the article, all birds lay eggs (and much of the food chain is dependent on eggs as a food source directly or indirectly) so I don't believe it's immoral to eat them. It is immoral to cause them any suffering though, & much better legislation is needed.

What can the average egg lover & animal welfare advocate do aside from getting their own chickens / sourcing from suppliers who don't use this horrific practice?

I live in Australia and contrary to your newly acquired belief, we do have screen doors and windows. They commonly look like this and are often called security doors/windows. Notice the distinct lack of gaps 😅

Yes bc they are free pest control. Cats control rats, huntsmans control most every invertebrate smaller than them and they're chill asf.
