Robert spares the man that killed his dad. Why? Because at the beginning he was mostly alone and didn’t have much of a life outside of Mecha Man but his time with the Z-team helped him become a better person just like he helped the Z-team.

Basically my take on Robert believes in second chances.

If I were to play the game I would have Robert start out as a messy asshole who’s obsessed with revenge but throughout the story he grows and becomes both a better person and hero. In the beginning he would want to kill Shroud, in the middle he doubts the idea and at the end despite everything…
