I accidentally got a tort effect the same way! The translucent on some started browning, but not losing the transparency, giving it that "shell" or "horn" effect. The downside is the smell.
Strings of polymer clay beads. One is black white grey and translucent, in their correct colors. The other is browned from burning, but it does give them a tortoiseshell effect (similar to buttons and other horn-based things). Individual beads showing the browning (burnt). The translucent stripes having the most notable differentiation, where thinner gradients appear lighter brown and depth is perceptible.
