I'm not saying it's not an issue that white Americans generally don't see the US as a settler/colonist nation, but let's not pretend like there aren't living communities in the US that aren't battling to tell the histories of how this very government terrorized them, here

Americans don’t seem to see that for Europeans, border disputes aren’t a funny distraction; they’re a matter of life and death ‪ironeconomist.bsky.social‬ ‪@ironeconomist.bsky.social‬ Think the Americans in general and the Trump administration in particular has savagely misjudged how Europeans feel about territorial sovereignty. It’s on an entirely different level of importance from economic security and there is almost no chance Greenland will be surrendered without bloodshed.

Harvie. I worked in their warehouse and even after they failed yet another safety and health inspection last summer, they are still somehow in business . They advertise that they only source form small and local farms and businesses when at least half of their stuff is sourced from out of state and bigger businesses. I’m talking berries from Driscolls and other produce from California and Mexico. NEVER order meat from there . Or really any frozen food. The “freezer” is never frozen. Stuff is constantly thawing out , including the raw meat , and the owners just have people ship it out anyway. There are also a ton of safety violations such as no dock plates between building and trailers when unloading and employees having to work in extreme temperatures with no breaks . There was a gas leak in the building earlier this year and several of the employees reported feeling sick and lightheaded . The owners didn’t give a shit and just told everyone to keep working because the boxes had to get out . The owners are 2 tech guys that know absolutely NOTHING about running a business. They use to have a thing called “shop” every Friday where they would let the employees take home any left over food that would go bad over the weekend . This helped out a lot of people with saving on groceries due to inflation and also the fact that Harvie doesn’t pay a livable wage . Well guess what? They took that away in order to do their “mystery boxes” for customers . A box that they charge customers some outrageous price to get random left over crap that they either can’t sell or is about to go bad. Speaking of prices , everything is outrageously priced. I never understood why people even bought from this place in the first place when they could go to the store and find the same things for a third of the price. American colonists famously rebelled against the practice of “taxation without representation”. Is environmental devastation without representation any different? Even if carbon emissions were thoroughly democratically determined – which they are not – why would voters in the world’s richest countries have the right to poison the air, sea, soil and rivers for the entire population of Earth? Carbon emitted in the US and Europe wreaks havoc in Pakistan, in Haiti, in Somalia, in the Philippines. But the people of these nations have no right to vote in American or European elections. As a way of arranging our collective political life, that looks less like democracy and more like another political system familiar to us here in Ireland: empire.
