Art is a Spark By Rusty Hatfield Art is a spark, and we are the flame. It found dry tinder in us. It reached into us, It pulled us apart and together again. As often as it needed, to ignite the fire of us. The cosmos is impartial, good is a thing left to mankind to create and when reason, and compassion fall on deaf ears Art is a spark We are not the candle flame Burning gently on your mantle piece. We are the tormented flame. The disturbed, and prodded Inferno. Belching forth constellations. So that each of those sparks might find dry tinder in them The glow of this fire lifts callous shadows So that men and women might better see men and women. So when the engines of change press in upon the tyranny of now we remember, and understand. That in the heart of that engine, there is a spark. and we are the flame. And a flame cannot be burned

The 1977 American animated musical television special, *The Hobbit*, created by Rankin/Bass and animated by Topcraft, adapts J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 book. Broadcast on NBC on November 27, 1977, the film earned a Peabody Award and a Christopher Award. While *The New York Times* found the film "curiously eclectic," Tolkien scholar Douglas A. Anderson labeled it "execrable," and author Baird Searles deemed it an "abomination" due to its animation quality, soundtrack, and missing plot points. The story follows Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit who lives peacefully in his hobbit-hole until Gandalf the wizard and thirteen dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, arrive with a mission. They aim to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. Despite his initial reluctance, Bilbo joins their adventure. Throughout their journey, the company encounters various challenges, including trolls, goblins, and spiders. Bilbo discovers a magical ring that grants invisibility, which aids in their escapes. The adventure leads them to the Lonely Mountain, where Bilbo engages in a cunning conversation with Smaug and discovers a vulnerability in the dragon's armor. This information allows Bard of Laketown to kill Smaug, although the town is destroyed in the process. A conflict arises over Smaug's treasure among the dwarves, Lakemen, and elves. Just as tensions peak, Gandalf warns of an approaching goblin army. The three groups unite to fight the goblins and their allies. After a fierce battle, Thorin reconciles with Bilbo before dying from his wounds. Bilbo returns home with his share of the treasure, guided by Gandalf, who hints at further adventures involving the mysterious ring.

The Pen Cuts Swiftly... The pen cuts swiftly across the page. The pale white bleakness that is the poets flesh. Words spill forth from open veins. Assuming the semblance of ink. We were giants then. I with my brush and you with your words. Amnesiac deities both. Gods in winter. Walking and trading secrets in the rain. Said I to you, "Is this love?" and you to I, "Is this love?" Such a silly ill defined thing. A steady hand excises the remnants of what once perhaps may have been. Gathered into syllables, words, and stanzas, pressing them into the shapes of thoughts and cancerous memories of happier times. The water drops slake the thirst of fertile soil beyond the glass. (The barrier between my world and that) Protection for that greater realm, containing stillness within. Entropy and stillness. For what else could come from half of duality. There is no inclination to dance. Lost are the edges of self. A specter in a fog having neither light nor shadow, with which to define a memory, that was once a man. A stroke of the pen severs my pain, separate yet still a part Troubling still, Yet less troubling. Bound now to paper, and bound in turn. Imprisoned between leather covers. Left to creep and sulk between the leaves.

Are the gods of your world real? For example, did your creation myth actually happen or is it a metaphor? If your creation myth happened how are those events interpreted by cultures aside from the dominant one? Do the have their own pantheons, and if so how does the telling of the story differ?

We gave it away, dropping it off at spots around town where like minds could be found. It really took off, attracting contributors from all around our area. Our art game was strong, and our poets were impactful, a testament to the talent in the community.
