after reading @lollardfish.bsky.social and @profgabriele.com 's Oathbreakers, i absolutely had to read The Bright Ages. their writing is charming, humanizing, serious when it needs to be, and light enough to brighten any age. plus, there's a very important elephant!

this day is already a glorious success because mushrooms. hell yeah

a cluster of six light beige mushrooms with brown scales radiating from the center of the cap. they're cutely squished together and growing on mulch, with a curb and some grass hiding in the background. the mushroom is probably Chlorophyllum molybdites, the false parasol mushroom.

that's how i interpret it! here's a picture of something similar on a binder's volume from the 19th century

a damaged brown binder's volume. the outer spine has come off at the top, revealing a protective layer of reused paper with illegible French text printed on it, and the bare paper of the text block at the very top

1911 was a good year for fancy sheet music covers! look at her, she's glowing

the cover for That Pierrot Dance, song, as sung by Miss Ethel Levey in Henry B. Harris and Jesse Lasky's production of "Folies Bergère". The title of the song is printed in black on white in a blocky font. In the top center, there is a tiny white lozenge with black text indicating "Popular Edition"The rest of the cover is a lovely lavender color, and the remaining text is white, in a similar blocky font. At the sides, there are two columns of ornamentation printed in yellow, with morning glories in white and green accenting the gold about one quarter of the way down. a late nineteenth or early twentieth century printing of the song Lullaby from the show Erminie. the printing is an advertisement for a medicine called Emerson's Bromo Seltzer, and has a depiction of the medicine bottle, which prices it at ten cents and proclaims it cures all headaches. there are three inexplicable baby cherubs by the bottle.
