Scary. I'm not surprised this would be the administration's next step. But before I panic I want to see another source that's not The Daily Beast and I'm having trouble finding one.

Like, I've never seen someone have to clarify themselves when they say they're from The States!

Yeah if you're speaking Spanish where americano means something different than estadounidense it makes sense to use the correct one. But in everyday English, the word for someone from the US is American.

"USian" just seems like weird pedantry!

I agree there needs to be a better term for the "bad" kind of suburbs. And I also think internet urbanism would benefit from separating the systems that lead to them from the people who live there.

It doesn't do any good to refine the language if we're still assuming a monolithic outgroup

People live in suburbs (any definition of suburbs) for lots of reasons, and assuming they're automatically a lost cause definitely drives a wedge between internet urbanism and suburban allies

I think even if people precisely defined the specific level of density and distance to the city they meant every time they used the word suburb, we would still have a problem.

Plenty of people live in suburbs — yes, even car-centric, low-density exurbs — who support transit/walkability/bike lanes

Yeah for sure! The point of a bus system is to be useful. There are so many variables between "free" and "useful", which is why I liked this episode.
