This weekend I'm finally going to give my mom the linocut I bought for her at the West Philly Craft fair last October. It's by Laura K. Murdoch, and I really hope to see her again at a future craft fair!

Things are going well in Columboland.

Getting some good stuff from the book about making Columbo

Made a New Years resolution to read 52 books this year. #1 was One Last Stop, so I think it's appropriate to ring out the year with another f/f romance 😄

Second (and probably last) chocopop batch for the year.

I've been debating whether to renew my Memrise subscription, but Duolingo just doesn't teach me phrases like this 🤔

(It previously taught me the phrase 单身狗, which literally means "single dog" but refers to a person who is single.)

Ugh Duolingo is teaching me the names of all the animals in Welsh and I still don't know how to say please, sorry, or bathroom. Last section it taught me how to say floor, wall, and ceiling, but no room names. This is the course Duolingo decided not to make any more improvements to??

Apple tries to group my favorites mix by theme (German songs go together, late 80s/early 90s Japanese pop goes together) but sometimes it's like, fuck it, Joanna Newsom, Orville Peck, a cover of Finland's 2023 Eurovision entry, DONE.

They had a raffle to auction off a baby tree to raise money to plant more trees. Early in the set one member knelt and held up the tree while the other tenderly serenaded it. The tree was won by a person who earnestly told the audience "we really could use a tree," so it's going to a good home.

Saw Moon Hooch live for the first time since I saw them open for They Might Be Giants over a decade ago! They're still awesome. I spent the whole set dancing

My cousin is getting married in late December. Since she knows a lot of crafty people she invited everyone to make some small animals that can be turned into ornaments and given out as party favors. I only got around to making three bunnies but she said she likes them a lot!

Apparently I haven't logged onto the steaming service formerly known as HBO Max since it became just Max, because my profile had the default picture. Delighted to find that shark week sharks are an option.

A lot of balloon crews were handing out trading cards!
October 14, 2023 at 12:18 AM
The crew of this balloon explained that this is their racing balloon--it's more oblong shaped, which makes it lighter and more aerodynamic.

It was cool to watch balloons get ready on a smaller scale than at the fiesta. We were able to talk to the crews a bit. One explained that the balloons taking off from this parking lot were all participating in a competition to fly to the first and grab stuff off poles/drop stuff on targets.

At first we thought we would go to the river and see if any balloons tried a splash and dash, but as we drove around we realized the wind was not taking the balloons to the river. Eventually we came across this dirt parking lot where a bunch of balloons were taking off.

Balloons went up this morning!
October 13, 2023 at 11:10 PM
It's too windy for the balloons to go up today, so we're going to the Nuclear Museum. I almost brought this exhibit to my mom's attention before I remembered that she wouldn't be familiar with "Expert judgment on markers to deter inadvertent human intrusion into the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant" 😅

The final balloon that caught our eyes was a dinosaur breaking out of an egg. It was accompanied by a person dressed in an inflatable T-Rex costume.

There were a bunch of smaller radio-controlled balloons that inflated but didn't take off. There was speculation they were trying for a world record for the number of RC balloons inflated simultaneously, but we never got an explanation. Many had gondolas equipped with toys or stuffed animals as crew

Some excellent balloons:
1. Teddy Bear with a tongue that flaps in the wind
2. Inadvertantly kissing frog balloons (the less inflated one is also a frog)
3. Ocean balloon with a 3D sea turtle and dolphin
4. (My nerdy favorite) fractal balloon!

A number of balloons inflated but didn't take off, possibly due to technical difficulties. The cat balloon, Smokey the Bear, and Darth Vader never took off. Yoda did take off and fly away, crewed partially by a baby Yoda doll hanging from the gondola.

It was actually the New Mexico True balloon, and it rose into the air flying a US flag while the national anthem played. I'm not sure if this happens every day or if it was done just because today was the "Flight of the Nations Mass Ascension." (A number of balloons flew other flags.)
