in other cities that have been composting for a looong time, there's a "story" about what happens to your food scraps. they go in the bin, a hauler collects your smelly waste, some stuff happens, it becomes compost that gets used by farmers! in NYC, this only happens to 1/5 of your food waste

one criticism i've heard of fining NYers for not separating their food scraps (aka "organics") is that it puts composting in the same bucket as other public nuisances you could get a ticket for - like riding your bike on the sidewalk
