this is what DSNY said when i asked them to respond to criticisms about this practice:

this is what DSNY said when i asked them to respond to criticisms about this practice:
in other cities that have been composting for a looong time, there's a "story" about what happens to your food scraps. they go in the bin, a hauler collects your smelly waste, some stuff happens, it becomes compost that gets used by farmers! in NYC, this only happens to 1/5 of your food waste
![As of now, food waste that gets picked up by DSNY will usually wind up in one of two places: a composting facility on Staten Island or a wastewater-treatment plant on the edge of Brooklyn and Queens. But last year, DSNY reported that only one-fifth of food waste collected actually makes it to the composting facility. The rest is sent to the wastewater-treatment plant in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Greenpoint. one criticism i've heard of fining NYers for not separating their food scraps (aka "organics") is that it puts composting in the same bucket as other public nuisances you could get a ticket for - like riding your bike on the sidewalk
