On this day, February 21, 109 years ago in 1916, the Battle of Verdun begins.

After a colossal barrage, the German 5th Army goes into full offensive on the Verdun salient. The French, caught off guard, suffer heavy losses as German forces advance.

On December 26 1914, he gave his life while assaulting a German trench

He was 26 years old

On 30 November 1917, at Cambrai, the Germans launched a surprise counteroffensive. Eleven divisions attacked along a ~20-kilometer front, quickly retaking much of the ground lost in the initial British advance.

German artillery shelled Bourlon Wood, with 16,000 shells hitting in one day, as reinforcements arrive for the planned counterattack.

On 27th November 1917, at Cambrai, the British Grenadier Guards captured most of Fontaine Notre Dame, but another attack on Bourlon is called off after heavy losses.

After early successes, the offensive has stalled, and the British now prepare to hold against a German counterattack.

Contrary to popular myth, the Arditi hardly used body armor as it was too cumbersome for attacks. Death Companies, however, wore extensive armor for shrapnel protection while clearing enemy wire.

On October 20, 1917, U-Class Zeppelin L49 (tactical number LZ 96) was forced down near Bourbonne-les-Bains in France and captured almost intact by French forces after a bombing run on England. Reverse-engineered, it influenced the American ZR-1 Shenandoah and British R-38 airships.

To address the poor cross-country performance of the A7V, in 1918 the Germans copied the rhomboidal design of the British Mark tank, creating the A7V-U (umlaufende Ketten - tracks running all the way around).

Twenty were ordered in 1918, but the war ended before delivery.
