2/2 A successful artist but she worked very slowly and her output is small, also suffering mental health problems. She died aged 48 in 1947 from a brain tumour. She was described as “among the outstanding artists of her generation.” Dulwich Picture Gallery held a retrospective of her work in 2016.

At lunchtime, a V2 rocket slams into the F.W. Woolworth store in Deptford SE London. 168 people are killed and scores wounded. Dr Harold Moody rushes to the scene. He will spend two days in the rubble helping to find survivors and treating the wounded.

Also joining in this rescue was Noel Streatfeild, author of ‘Ballet Shoes, who ran a WVS canteen in Deptford. She had worked at a munitions factory in Woolwich during WWI.
