Three ballot initiatives. Vote in this order: No, Yes, No. Initiative #1: It's phrased as an anti-discrimination thing, and even puts the good stuff in bold. But it sneaks in a bit about "the city can't discriminate against businesses based on association with a foreign nation". This makes the city powerless to boycott other nations, e.g. to boycott Israel or Russia. Vote no. Initiative #2: Should the city water and sewer remain publicly controlled? Vote yes. Initiative #3: Places limits on the kinds of things we can choose democratically by restricting the use of home rule charter amendments. Vote no. 16

Be open to their perspectives and consider what could be holding them back. 2. How do people push back? Individuals may use many different strategies to stop, invalidate, or disconnect from ongoing DEl initiatives. There are three main strategies: 1. Denial: "This isn't a problem. There's no need for DEl because everyone is already equally included." 2. Disengagement: "This isn't my problem. I'm not affected by DEI, so it doesn't matter." 3. Derailment: "What about other problems? There's more important things to focus on."

A Note on Belonging A key part of inclusion is belonging, or how much someone perceives they're being included. While inclusion involves the actual behaviors or efforts of people in an organization, belonging is what the employees actually feel as a result. Belonging takes a group effort. Having a shared sense of purpose and connection at a workplace - for example, through similar values, passions, or motivations - helps employees feel like they belong.

Adding the "|" In comes the "I" in DEl. Inclusion is what happens when those who are from diverse backgrounds feel welcomed within a certain group (hopefully because they actually are being welcomed). Is a workplace inviting to everyone? Are diverse voices truly being invited - and heard - in decision-making processes? Does everyone feel valued and respected on an equal level?

The Fence Analogy Imagine that three kids are standing in front of a fence to watch a baseball game. They're all different heights - one kid can see above the fence easily, the second barely can, and the third kid is too short. Equity, in this case, means giving each kid something different to stand on based on their specific height. This way, they can all achieve the same outcome of seeing clearly.

Equity vs. Equality If that's equity, then what's this equality that we hear about so often? What's the difference? Equality is when every person in a group is given the same resources or opportunities. But, different types of people might not be able to access those resources in the same way as others. Equity accounts for this and gives specific resources to certain groups so that they'll achieve the same outcome.

Definition While diversity simply refers to the differences between individuals, equity ensures fair and equal access, opportunity, and advancement for each of those individuals. It's when employers provide support for employees based on their specific needs and work to eliminate barriers to equitable treatment. Sometimes, companies might commit to changing system-wide policies, processes, and procedures in order to achieve equity.

Definition While all the aspects of DEI work together, it's important to understand the differences between each part. The "D" in DEl, diversity, is simply the presence of differences within an environment. The more differences, the more diversity. It includes anything that sets one individual apart from another. Some examples include race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic status, language, disability status, age, and political perspective.
