Medicaid is a lifeline for millions of Americans, including over 1.7 million Virginians.

I held a roundtable today to discuss The Commonwealth Institute’s new report on how the Trump-Republican budget cuts to Medicaid will harm veterans and military families in Virginia.

DYK: 64% of all ICE detainers issued to Virginia facilities in FY2023 were for individuals who have never been convicted of any crime.

This EO is all about increasing fear in our immigrant communities. Localities should resist entering in similar agreements with ICE!
Gov. Youngkin’s Executive Order 47, deputizing #Virginia State Police/DOC to enforce federal #immigration law, will:

❌reduce community safety by diverting resources & eroding trust in law enforcement,
❌lead to more unreported crimes, &
❌likely exploitation of immigrant communities.🧵

Disappointed but not deterred. We will continue to call on federal legislators to say no to Medicaid cuts and other barriers to coverage. Virginia families are counting on them!
"Freddy Mejia, a Medicare coverage advocate and policy director at The Commonwealth Institute, said he’s “disappointed” the senators’ language specifically addressing the trigger law didn’t make it into the budget draft."

Virginia lawmakers made the decision to expand Medicaid in 2018; it is only right they get a chance to weigh in before anyone loses coverage in the event of federal cuts.
Recent #VaBudget choice requires a key convo to weigh options if fed govt cuts Medicaid expansion $.

“It’s a step in the right direction to try to create a timeline where addressing cuts doesn’t start w/ people's automatic coverage loss,” Mejia said.

The Senate also removed this misguided provision introduced by the governor that would harm localities that don’t engage in costly and burdensome detentions to assist ICE.
The House of Delegates' budget amendments also remove a proposed provision from Gov Youngkin that withholds funding from any local law enforcement agency that "prohibits or
impedes communication or cooperation" w/ICE

The proposal to "equalize Medicaid payments for able-bodied adults" = cutting Medicaid expansion match by hundreds of billions of dollars which would result in millions losing coverage.
