#SpookyScience for today and Sunday will be spiders! This is a female spiny-backed orb weaver, Gasteracantha cancriformis (gaster = belly, acantha = thorn in Greek & cancer = crab, formis = shape/form in Latin). They are native to the Americas and have short lifespans, living till reproduction 🧪 🕷️

I haven't been super active on Bluesky but now that I can post videos, I can talk about my work. I study freshwater fish mating systems and evolution. A lot of which involves recording video and doing genetic parentage analyses with wild populations like these spawning Bluegill. 🧪🐟
