By all accounts it's on the list of known things to do, it's just lower priority than some other things. It's also believed to be quite complex due to device compat needs which also impacts the priority

On a separate tangential note, it frustrates the hell out of me that the BBC News app will only play video in a landscape crop in portrait mode, even if it's a portrait video. It's like watching an animated postage stamp. The old app was SO much better.
