He was coworker so I couldn’t say anything but I avoided him as much as I could after that. I know he wasn’t even alive at that time so his feelings were based on external factors not experience but I was still pretty appalled that he felt okay saying that to someone he didn’t even know.

I met one once a few years ago, he was a younger than me, maybe 30? He seemed okay but then there was an awkward silence and I asked him what it was like in Johannesburg and he said that it sucked (why he left) and that it was better 40 years ago and I was like “huh” and got up and left.

This is devastating. I was proud that OPB was supporting such excellent journalism and I’d intended to add it to my “Donte to the creators I love” list. Glad I didn’t, as it apparently wouldn’t have mattered anyways. I’ll direct that money to a substack subscription instead.

This is why medical tourism is a thing. Once in the US, I got told a crown for my root canal was cosmetic so ins would only cover 20%. In Turkey, dental work is so cheap, I don’t bother with insurance because the add on costs more than I spend in a year. :/

They also probably gather data on your device ID, so if you’re logging in from a personal device from a different location, it won’t get flagged

As someone who tests these things for work, I can tell you that it’ll probably be something like Netflix’ system: your ‘home’ IP address is likely based on viewing patterns, when out of that area by a lot it’s assumed travel and not flagged, when you’re out a little, you’re asked to verify it’s you.
