It's then though that the helicopter suddenly lurches. An oh-so familiar black tentacle with neon markings wraps around the landing skid, and on the ground below, Maruki smirks. “Oh, come the fuck on!” Goro snaps, frustration pulsing in his chest. He takes back what he said about Maruki’s determination – this is just pathetic. “S-someone needs to stop him!” Morgana squawks. “None of us can escape the Palace like this!” Before any of the Thieves can speak, Akira’s voice cuts through the air like a knife. “Allow me.” Staring down at the therapist, he smiles softly. “I think I can get him to see reason.” A rock ledges itself in Goro’s stomach as his head snaps towards his rival, wild-eyed. Maruki’s reality is falling to pieces around them, and both of them know what that means - once Akira makes that jump, he’s not coming back. As the light from the dying paradise frames him like a halo, however, the former detective looks nothing but serene. With cold certainty, Goro realises that this is his choice – the final decision he’ll ever make. And no matter how much Goro wants to hold onto every single moment with Akira he has left and never let go, he has no right to take that away from him. Instead, he nods. “Then I’ll leave this in your hands, Joker.” Goro gets one last look at his rival’s brilliant smile before he leaps out the cockpit, vanishing from his sight for good.

The detective shrugs, his mouth set in a tense, miserable line, and Goro’s eyes narrow to slits. Kurusu knew they were confronting Maruki tonight – did he think Goro was going to chicken out at the last moment or some rot? A flash of indignation runs through him at the mere idea. Does his rival seriously think he’s that craven? Unless, no – judging by Kurusu’s demeanour, perhaps it’s the opposite. Perhaps he’s the one here to beg Goro to fold. As Kurusu stays silent, Goro shakes the thoughts from his mind. There’s no need to be so scathing towards his rival over mere unfounded suspicions. Quite frankly, if he were Kurusu, he’d find both suggestions nauseatingly insulting. It’s Morgana who brings them back to reality. The not-cat murmurs, fur spiking. “Wait, why does this concern those two in particular…?” A wistful smile crosses the therapist’s face as he glances between the rivals. “The relationship you share is very unique. Despite being natural enemies – a detective and a phantom thief – you developed a deep understanding of one another.” Like a flower left in the sun for too long, however, Maruki begins to wilt. “That’s why I found it so tragic when I learned what happened in Shido’s Palace…” Blood roars in his ears, muting all but the escalating sound of his heartbeat as ice crawls through his veins. No. That’s not possible. Goro’s mind begins to race. Maruki didn’t gain control over reality until New Year's Eve. Except… except they killed Yaldabaoth on Christmas Eve, didn’t they? Makoto’s sudden recovery. Morgana’s reappearance. Kurusu. Each minor miracles that occurred before the end of the year, ones that Goro dismissed as mere happenstance. But they weren’t, and Goro already knows what Maruki’s going to say before the words are even out of his mouth.

Excerpt from chapter 34 of OLWI: “Oh yeah!” Morgana’s eyes suddenly blow wide, his exclamation catching a few odd glances from the nurses. Shrinking back down into Goro's bag, his voice turns into a whisper. “You have the Treasure, right, Lady Ann?” Blinking with surprise, she reaches into her pocket. “Yeah, I think I do! Sorry, I completely forgot about it considering, well… everything. Here.” She passes something far too small to Goro, and he stares long and hard at the object for several moments. It’s a legislator’s pin. “So much harm, caused by something so small…” Sae murmurs as she voices Goro’s exact thoughts, brows furrowed. “What do you plan on doing with it?” His eyes linger on the pin, before he clenches his fist tightly around it, and scans the hall for the nearest bin. With a toss Kurusu would have envied, Shido’s Treasure falls into darkness, never to be seen again.

Excerpt from chapter 33 of OWLI: Goro grits his teeth as he bubbles in rage. Kurusu was right – Shido is nothing but a monster, and one way or another, he needs to be put down. “I’ve listened to enough of your nonsense. You’re right that this is an unjust country - in fact, you're the epitome of everything goddamn wrong with it - but despite everything, there’s still good to be found in this land! And those people, as rare as they may be, deserve a hell of a lot better than you!” Coming to a stop at the top of the podium, the Shadow’s eyes twitch. “Dissenters to my rule have no right to life. However, considering Kurusu’s loss, it would be a waste to eliminate the ones actually capable of properly using their powers. I’ll give you one last chance. Devote yourself to me, and wealth, status, devotion… it will all be yours for the taking.” Perhaps, in another lifetime, Shido’s offer would have been tempting. A honeyed lie offering a forbidden fruit so salivating Goro couldn’t help but bite into it. In this life, however, he can see Shido’s promise for all that it is – a bald-faced pack of lies. “Drop dead and go to hell.” He snaps, the only response Shido deserves.

Excerpt from chapter 22 of OLWI: “M-mum…” Futaba murmurs, breaking off with a sob as she rubs her eyes. Kurusu grimaces, not meeting her eyes, and a pang runs through Goro at the awful reminder of the cost of his rival’s vengeance. Justice is so much simpler in a world that’s black or white, or even one entirely stained with darkness. Perhaps it would be freeing to write Kurusu off as a lost cause, another rotten person using their powers for rotten ends. The damnable thing is, that’s simply not true. Because Goro knows from the bottom of his soul he would have done the exact same thing in Kurusu’s shoes. Thrown away his fledging bonds if it meant society would burn, taking Shido down with it. And, by that same metric, if Kurusu hadn’t been incarcerated, if he had met a talking cat instead of a corrupt politician, he could have followed Goro’s footsteps. Let compassion soften the sharpness in his soul until his blade was only pointed at those who’d earned it. (Kurusu had nearly thrown everything he worked for away when he jumped between a shadow and the girl he promised to protect. Goro wouldn’t have done the same in his shoes.) A flash of anger runs through him. Kurusu is an irritating, annoying enigma. Victim and perpetrator hand in hand, a caged dog that bites back not only at the one who kicks it, but any poor fool that happens to stray near him. (He’s brilliant. Goro’s never met anyone else who shines even a fragment as much as Kurusu does. He can’t help but grind his teeth – if only they could have stood side-by-side, instead of squabbling from opposite ends of the playing field.)

Excerpt from chapter 31 of OWLI: Kurusu Akira is fourteen years old when his life goes to absolute shit. Before that day, that day that changed everything, he was a normal kid. Quiet, unassuming, never standing out from the crowd. Liked, but not loved. Witty, but never the class clown. A diligent son, who never asked too much from his family. He hadn’t yet realised being normal in this hellhole of a world is, by definition, a sin. Because as he hears a woman’s panicked cry when walking home one day, followed by a loud man’s drunken slurs, unlike normal people, he freezes. Because unlike normal people, instead of keeping his head down and assuming it’s none of his business, he runs towards the commotion, even though his heart races in his chest like a frightened mouse. Because unlike normal people, as he sees a bald man whose cheeks are flushed with liquor dragging a struggling woman towards his car, Akira intervenes. As the man half-trips over his own feet, threatening to sue, Akira feels no fear, because he doesn't yet realise that being good is different from being normal. The man is clearly in the wrong, and him the right – why would Akira be the one to get punished? Suffice to say, when one threat later the very woman he saved turns on him, it hits him with all the force of a slap in the face. When the police tune out his protests, attention solely focused on the well-dressed man he would later learn is Shido Masayoshi, fear and indignation rise inside him in equal measure. As he’s the one shoved into the back of a police car, handcuffs biting into his wrist, Akira learns several important lessons. Lesson one – being good is not normal. Lesson two – there’s no point in being good (though it'll take a little while longer for that to sink in). Lesson three – the only thing the world cares about is power.
