Yeah this is an old fem tech argument. It was recently misapplied in a piece about AI and emotions. We don’t think of tech as human to humanize the tech. We are supposed to think about tech as humanoid, with possible rights or ethical needs, BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL TREAT HUMANS (WOMEN/FEMMES) LIKE TECH
I talked to a researcher who studies social isolation about this in 2023. Friendships, unlike AI, aren't built on "instant gratification": What happens when people "try to create real intimacy with a real person ... who can’t be manipulated in the same way?” www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...
Creators, porn stars turn to AI doppelgangers to keep fans entertained
The latest wave of AI is being built to emulate specific people, adopting their faces and speech patterns to advertise uncanny simulations the promoters say are always available and can never die.

supply and demand doesn’t adequately explain friendships.

we must develop a friendship theory value, in which value is derived from the socially necessary friendship time.
Mark Zuckerberg says Meta's chatbots will supplement your real friends: "The average American has fewer than 3 friends ... but has demand for ... 15 friends" (h/t x.com/romanhelmetg...)

“Cripping is a particular and particularly messy act. To crip, to claim crip, embraces a multitude of meanings-making and claims-making, but I want to argue that crip is also an undoing, a multitude of taking apart, of rupture and disruption.”
Lads, I am very rubbish at posting here, but: I wrote a thing, and it is now out with Feminist Theory. doi.org/10.1177/1464... - it's called The Necessary Pleasures of the Crip Killjoy and it's about thinking with brain fog and discomfort and violence and joy in refusal.

Lucy Lippard just taught me the word “frippery”, and obviously, I will now need to seek out as many opportunities as possible to involve myself in “blatantly female fripperies”.

This comes full circle with writers like Kodwo Eshun and Sadie Plant, who tend to take on a popular writing style, but end right back in the wonderful realm of “the obscure, the opaque, the impenetrable.”
"Why do we...lionize this...pseudopopulist orientation and...denounce the kind of writing most of our colleagues engage in in one way or another? Why do we reflexively believe that difficult writing...writing deemed opaque or inaccessible, is an inherent problem?"
