Yeah totally. I’d love to know the original height of the top of harbour, as I assume wave action has diminished it. Lots of the loose stone is lying around, so I guess it’s been brought low.

yes, the weight thresholds should be much lower!

Ah interesting, though I think I’ll stay in my composting lane…

Yeah the thermophilic microbes that prosper at over 70 run out of water & air v quickly, so if I didn’t turn and water nearly every day (!) the population would crash and it would go totally cold because other mesophilic bacteria have already been killed by the heat.

It’s like having a pet. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

haha!

I’m guessing your Berneray compost will have plenty of seaweed? Yes, I’m composting the neighbourhood’s coffee!

Yes, totally agree, the garden/gut biome paradigm feels very significant. I’m not entirely no dig but my gardening practice has definitely shifted towards mulch feeding, though more recently than you.

Och I’m sorry re your allotment. Yes, even on its own coffee has a good C:N ratio for composting. I’m pretty sure it does good things for us too.

Happily for my internal organs, this is the output of our local cafe.

If you’re not making cold brew with a garden fork, what are you even doing?

The heat also kills weed seeds, but there are downsides. Cooler, more fungal compost is more bioactive. This heap will be eventually be left unturned so that worms (and fungi) can get to it – not now tho, they’d be cooked.

Not at all stupid, the bacterial pop and temp would crash if I didn’t turn it daily. As long I keep aerating & adding new material it stays hot which is my aim as I compost food waste & I need it too hot for mice.

😬
October 7, 2025 at 9:38 PM
well, or foolhardy!… but it seems to stay hot as long as I keep adding and turning.
October 7, 2025 at 9:27 PM
och I would *love* to get an infrared thermograph of the garden ... 'mon the Polis, make it happen!

I know no one cares, nor should they, but this is my microbial Roman Empire.

Nothings happens and yet *everything* happens.
