If you're wondering about the symbolism of the suit - notably donned by Musk at last night's SOTU, in a departure from his usual attire - we have some bits on this in our recent article @benclift.bsky.social @benrosamond1.bsky.social @sotonpolitics.bsky.social

We return to the idea of authenticity in the conclusion, reflecting on its relationship with affective representation.

Unusually, nostalgia is also relevant for us methodologically. It allows us to develop the concept of simulated authenticity and show how being white, male and suit-wearing confers authority in gendered expertise regimes (cf. @mergito.bsky.social)

But it wouldn’t be one of my papers if *nostalgia* wasn’t involved somehow.

As ever in British politics, imperial and colonial nostalgias are evident here. They shape the content and style of our two masculinised modes of expertise.

We trace two masculinised styles of expertise – the priest and the hired gun. But we also find that these modes of expertise view the economy in similarly exclusionary ways.

Our analysis also applies to other ‘scientific’ domains of expertise, e.g in public health and climate governance.

My latest article, written with @benclift.bsky.social and @benrosamond1.bsky.social, is out #OA in Economy & Society. We use Brexit discourses as a window into the gendered politics of economic expertise. @sotonpolitics.bsky.social 🧵
