Eraserhead (1977) was not the first Midnight Movie, but it was the first Midnight Movie to make the audience shut up, sit down and watch the goddamn film. (That's my memory of it, anyway.)

Last night's movie. Seven Keys to Baldpate (1947). Originally a 1913 bestselling whodunnit, it was turned into a play by George M. Cohan, which was adapted for the screen seven times. Ironic, that. This one stars Phillip Terry, although they obviously wanted Fred MacMurray.

Tonight's feature. Deadline at Dawn (1946). irresistibly stilted dialogue and carefully crafted implausibly from Cornell Woolrich, Clifford Odets and an uncredited William Cameron Menzies. Flawless cinematography by Nicholas Musuraca. Slippery and spicy. "Time takes so long and it goes so fast."
