If I had to throw a British defender in there it would be Martin Buchan. Over the years, United had three CBs who were world class: Buchan, McGrath and Stam. It didn't matter who played alongside them. Nobody really remembers who played alongside them.

No 3 would be your boy, Gazza. Unfortunately, I only saw him a couple of times, in his early years at Spurs, and probably before his peak.

I enjoyed your book Chris. Have you read the Seymour Stein book, Siren Song? Also very interesting. Both really evoke that period, late 70s, early 80s, really beautifully.
