One more thought--We like to "keep score." Our income level and weight are just two examples from the adult world, and we have strategies that improve our "score." Grades are the way students "keep score," and they learn a good strategy to get a good grade is to submit assignments on time.

Justin, you hit the nail on the head when you talked about when students are doing the LATE work, they ALSO have the current work to deal with. It's like Lucy and Ethel at the candy factory.

Deadlines are important in school assignments because deadlines are a fact of adult life...and if we don't teach students about them now, we do them a disservice.
