The red area is the section Ukraine would concede to Russia, or maybe negotiate for a smaller area. I hate to see Putin win anything. There is a good chance I am wrong, but sadly, it may be best for now. Then NATO can help defend the new border, like the area between North and South Korea.

My condolences to his family for their loss. I never liked what he did or said while Vice President, but I never doubted his love for America.
