She is the only person to have been awarded two Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields, Physics in 1903 and Chemistry in 1911. She died in 1934 from radiation exposure, linked to her research and her radiological work in field hospitals during WWI.

Her father was president of General Electric, and left her a substantial wealth. In 1967, she made a donation to the Carnegie institution that was used to build the « Swope telescope » at Las Campanas Observatory.
